Veld Management

1. Training Introduction

Veld (rangeland) ecosystems are vital for livestock production, biodiversity conservation, and rural livelihoods, particularly in semi-arid and arid regions. However, unsustainable grazing practices, climate variability, invasive species, and land degradation have significantly reduced veld productivity and resilience.

This training programme is designed to equip participants with practical knowledge and skills to manage veld resources sustainably. The programme focuses on balancing livestock production with ecological health through effective grazing management, veld assessment, rehabilitation, and climate-resilient practices.

2. Training Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles and ecology of veld management
  • Assess veld condition and carrying capacity
  • Apply sustainable grazing systems and stocking strategies
  • Prevent and rehabilitate veld degradation
  • Integrate veld management with livestock production
  • Promote biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services
  • Enhance resilience of rangelands to climate variability

3. Targeted Group

This training is designed for:

  • Livestock Farmers and Ranch Managers
  • Rangeland and Veld Management Officers
  • Agricultural Extension Officers
  • Communal Land and Grazing Committee Members
